ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Educational Qualification
Candidates must hold a graduation degree in any discipline from a recognized university or an equivalent qualification approved by the Central Government. Final-year students or those awaiting results are also eligible to apply on a provisional basis. However, they must provide valid proof of passing the graduation exam at the time of the interview stage.
SBI PO Exam Pattern
Phase I: Preliminary Examination
The Preliminary Exam is the first stage in the SBI PO selection process and acts as a screening test.
- Mode of Exam: Conducted online. Candidates are assigned a computer where they first receive instructions, followed by the questions displayed on the screen to be answered within the given time.
- Nature of Exam: Qualifying in nature. Marks obtained in this phase are not counted towards the final merit list.
- Progression: Only candidates who clear this stage can appear for the Mains Examination.
Marking Scheme:
- Each correct answer carries 1 mark
- For every incorrect answer, 0.25 marks are deducted as negative marking
Language of Paper:
- English Language section: English only
- Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning sections: available in both English and Hindi
Cut-off Criteria:
- No sectional cut-off is applied
- Selection is based on overall performance and meeting the total cut-off score
Sectional Timing:
- Each section has a fixed time limit of 20 minutes
- Total duration of the Preliminary Exam is 1 hour

Phase II: Main Examination
The SBI PO Main Exam is the second stage of the selection process and includes both Objective and Descriptive tests, conducted online. Candidates must type their responses for the descriptive section on a computer. The descriptive test is scheduled immediately after the objective test is completed.
(i) Objective Test
- Duration: 3 hours
- Total Marks: 200
- The paper is divided into 4 sections, each carrying 50 marks
- Candidates must secure the minimum qualifying marks in each section as set by the bank

(ii) Descriptive Test
- Duration: 1 hour
- Total Marks: 50
- This section evaluates English language skills through Essay Writing and Letter Writing
- Only those candidates who clear the objective test and rank sufficiently high will have their descriptive answers evaluated
- Final qualifying marks for this section are determined by the bank
Phase III: Group Discussion & Interview
Candidates who successfully clear the Main Examination are shortlisted for the final stage, which includes:
- Group Discussion: 20 marks
- Interview: 30 marks
Based on the combined performance in the objective and descriptive tests, candidates are shortlisted category-wise in descending order. The bank decides the cut-off marks for qualifying in both Group Discussion and Interview rounds.
- 1. Marks from the Preliminary Exam (Phase I) are not included in the final selection
- 2.Final merit is calculated using marks from:
- 1.Main Examination (Phase II)
- 2.Group Discussion & Interview (Phase III)
- The scoring is normalized as follows:
- 1.Main Exam marks (out of 250) are converted to 75
- 2.GD & Interview marks (out of 50) are converted to 25
- The final merit list is prepared out of 100 marks by combining both scores. Candidates must qualify in both Phase II and Phase III separately. Selection is based on top-ranking candidates in each category.
