IBPS Exam Pattern Overview
Preliminary Examination
The preliminary exam includes:
The Preliminary Exam is the first stage in the SBI PO selection process and acts as a screening test.
- Mode of Exam: Conducted online. Candidates are assigned a computer where they first receive instructions, followed by the questions displayed on the screen to be answered within the given time.
- Nature of Exam: Qualifying in nature. Marks obtained in this phase are not counted towards the final merit list.
- Progression: Only candidates who clear this stage can appear for the Mains Examination.
Marking Scheme:
- Each correct answer carries 1 mark
- For every incorrect answer, 0.25 marks are deducted as negative marking
Language of Paper:
- English Language section: English only
- Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning sections: available in both English and Hindi
Cut-off Criteria:
- No sectional cut-off is applied
- Selection is based on overall performance and meeting the total cut-off score
Sectional Timing:
- Each section has a fixed time limit of 20 minutes
- Total duration of the Preliminary Exam is 1 hour

This is the initial screening stage consisting of objective-type questions. It includes sections such as Reasoning, English Language, and Quantitative Aptitude. The exam is designed to test speed and accuracy with a shorter duration and moderate difficulty level.

- Candidates who clear the Main Examination are shortlisted for the interview round. This stage is conducted by participating banks and coordinated by a nodal bank in each state or union territory with the support of IBPS.

- The final selection is based on a combined score where:
